Put the cursor at the beginning of the section you want to replace and re-record the words.Īssuming that the segments are or more less the same size (if they're not, you can split the track and add some silence), follow these instructions to replace the original segment. Audacity will still make a new track, but will continue it from your cursor (instead of the beginning of the timeline).Īfterwards, edit your audio as necessary. Optionally, if you do use the Stop button, move your cursor to the track end before you continue recording. Try to record each chapter as one track by using the Pause button when necessary (instead of the Stop button).

While testing, adjust your volume as necessary.

Download and install Audacity and the LAME encoder, under the plug-ins section on the download page.

You'll have full control over input volume. Create a virtual audio device with your USB audio device, then use that as your recording input in Audacity. It's not cheap at $99, but it gets the job done. The only application we found that can help in this regard (we tried many, including Soundflower, Sound Control, and Sound Siphon) is Loopback. This is why turntable preamps with volume controls are most useful. In this instance, the signal you get is the signal you're stuck with. Skip through the record to any especially loud sections to make sure your settings will work for the whole recording.Adjust the recording levels using the slider just below the meter to avoid clipping, while ensuring the source is loud enough.

You want to aim for a maximum peak of about -6dB (0.5 if you've chosen a linear meter).

Start playing the record you want to record.

Click the record meter at the top of the screen, where it says Click to start monitoring.
